Saturday May 22, 2021 Are You Okay, Inc. in conjunction with Charitable Giving Hearts hosted their 2nd Annual Safe Zone open forum surrounding the topic of Mental Health Awareness. This was in accordance with May being Mental Health Awareness Month. This event was open to the public to allow people from all walks of life to have a “Safe Zone” to discuss, vent, and be enlightened on the mental health issues that we or someone we might know is or have faced. According to the American Psychiatric Association “Mental illness is a multitude of health conditions involving changes in emotions, thinking, and behaviors, which are associated with distress and/or functioning in social, work or family activities.” (www.psychiatry.org). In the United States “over 16% of those who identify as Black reported having a mental illness in the past year, which equates to a little over seven million people who have suffered from this form of illness (www.mhnational.org).” This program also brought awareness to the disparity of mental illness in the Caribbean culture. The people from a Caribbean background who shared their stories stated that mental illness is something that is rarely acknowledged and almost always disregarded. The whole experience of the “Safe Zone” was filled with testimonials, questions, games, and prizes, while photographer MaxoKeyz captured every heart-felt moment with his lens. Ending the event and evening with DJ Lexxma playing the latest tunes that you just couldn’t help but dance to.
The program commenced with a series of questions posed to panelist’s Marilyn N., Natacha A., Maxi D., & Fougere J. For each question that was asked, the responses given by each panelist, brought a wave of emotions to everyone in the room, ranging from anger and disappointment to tear shedding and pure sadness. After all the questions were asked, replied with knowledge, intertwined with life experiences, and the added rollercoaster of emotions came to an end, everyone in the room became empathetic to the things that some of the panelist had to experience. Thereafter, was the Step into Your Truth session. This session was open for any and all to step into their truth and release by verbalizing what it is that has been a bother to them for such a long time, to acknowledge that they have a happy place to retreat to, and ways to overcome those demons that haunt them inside.

Baton Rouge has been consistently ranked as one of the 10 least safe cities in America, as per WalletHub. A problematic city to live in, by most accounts, with a high incidence of crime. From a myriad of challenges comes an astute music producer by the name of Joshua Johnson. Or by his rapidly-becoming-popular stage moniker, the SoundTrackGeniuz.
Whilst other kids were getting into crime, Joshua was getting into his own unique brand of trouble. By his own account humming with his mouth and making weird noises, were a source of exasperation for those around him. It brings the image of a geek in high school that is misunderstood by those around him. Socially awkward yet a lot of conversations are being conducted in his mind. “The next big thing” is often not perceived by those around it.Despite having a passion for music, Joshua didn’t always think he would become a producer. “I always knew I would be something just never thought (it would be) music.”
SoundTrackGeniuz started his production journey as a 14-year-old using beat making software FL Studio. There is a great success quote: “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” The SoundTrackGeniuz taught himself how to make beats and hasn’t looked back since then. He would admit that there were numerous days when the beats ranged from bad to terrible but it was a necessary process for one of Baton Rouge’s burgeoning producers.
The talented producer has become a name synonymous with good beats in the south. His talents have allowed him to expand his reach around the USA with collaborations with popular musicians. The list includes Youngboy, OG_3three, NBA BigB and many others. This has vastly contributed to the rise of a gifted musician. This is a long way from his mother’s small room where he realized that beat production was the path he wanted to take. By consistently playing and developing beats on his mothers’ box computer he was able to refine his skills and develop his own distinct sound.
Together with AshleyDenay, SoundTrackGeniuz launched STGAudio in Denham Springs, Louisiana in the year 2019. It was only a year before that Joshua started to use the name SoundTrackGeniuz. The talented pair both take on the roles of sound engineer, producer and songwriter. A jack of all trades with a brush of arrogance!
It’s quite an awesome tale of a self-made man. Many aspiring producers attend university education but never attain the level that Joshua now operates. Even though surrounded by crime and other challenges in Baton Rogue, the “SoundTrackGeniuz” was birthed through dedication, commitment and belief that music can be a way out of those problems.
Even amid a global pandemic, the SoundTrackGeniuz harbors great ambitions for 2021. The year can and should be a defining period for the Louisiana native. More collaborations and the growth of the STGAudio brand is the vision being pursued. Due to the rapid ascendancy and immense talent of this producer, its fulfilment almost seems like a foregone conclusion.
A story already of inspirational proportions is on the precipice of expanding even further. All personal development coaches communicate the value of loving what you do and the positive impact it has on your success. The SoundTrackGeniuz provides a positive case study for this hypotheses. Passion is indeed a great driver of success. And music has always been a viable tool of passionate self-expression. How ironic that music is the fulcrum of this tale!
